The history of cement utility poles

In the early days of electric power communication, wooden utility poles were commonly used. However, wooden poles were prone to decay and insect infestation, leading to high maintenance costs and a limited service life. In the mid-to-late 19th century, reinforced concrete pole technology was born in Europe, ushering in the era of concrete towers. In the mid-20th century, with the gradual maturity of centrifugal casting and prestressing processes, concrete poles began to be widely promoted and used globally. China trial-produced its first batch of cement poles in 1924 and achieved large-scale production in the 1950s, gradually replacing wooden poles in serving grid construction. After the 1980s, standardized production became widespread, and tapered poles and uniform-diameter poles were widely used in urban and rural distribution networks. Today, China-made cement utility poles are produced according to international standards and are exported to Southeast Asia, Africa, and other regions. With their advantages of corrosion resistance, long service life, and controllable cost, they have become important components in global electric power infrastructure.
